The boxing season kicked off this year in a very successful fashion, for the team at Nerang PCYC. With the strongest team from our gym in five years we set out to start the year on a winning note. Unfortunately only four boxers got matches on the night. Two weight in fights and two pre arranged challenge bouts for a spot on the Australian senior’s team to compete at the world titles later in the year.
The night got off to a shaky start with Brett winning a close fought battle on a count back after an initial draw. Next up was Tyrone Jones or “show bags” as he is affectionately know around the gym, in for his first fight. Showy over came a serious case of first night nerves to take a comfortable unanimous points decision.
Then for the challenge bouts, with the stakes so high the level of boxing increased dramatically. Adrian Andrews executed the fight plan perfectly to secure a narrow points victory in the light heavy weight division (the picture below is of Adrian a little bit happy with his performance). This was a very exciting fight with Adrian only getting ahead in the last 30 seconds of the last round. Both fighters preformed well but unfortunately there is only one spot on the Australian team and fortunately it went to Adrian who is an excellent ambassador for our club.
Last of all Rohan Murdock fought Jesse Ross for the 69kg spot. Rohan and Jess trained at the same club for a number of years and are close friends. Rohan was too good and won the fight comfortably although Jess never stopped trying and won a lot of fans with a great show of heart. Congratulations to all our fighters for a job well done.
